Gelpack Retraining

This puzzle requires the Target Training Sequences data page, and the Local Bio-Neural Gelpack page.
The “Example Subroutines” on the Target Training Sequences pages can help demonstrate how different sets of icons indicate specific modifications to words.
When completing target training sequence 1, you’ll start by modifying the word WASHER so that you get a new six-letter word, then modifying that word so that you get another new six-letter word, then modifying that word so that you get the word EITHER.
The Local Bio-Neural Gelpack image serves as a list of all the available methods available for modifying words. These modification methods are referred to as “subroutines.”
On the Local Bio-Neural Gelpack image, the 7th listed subroutine takes all letter A’s in a word and changes them to I’s. This can modify the word WASHER to be WISHER and is the correct first step. As you go forward, keep in mind there is another subroutine that can modify a word to be one letter shorter, and a tricky subroutine that can increment every letter of a word one step forward in the alphabet.
As you work out the 12 modifications needed to complete target training sequence 1, take note of the letters inside of the gelpack for each subroutine used. The 12 noted letters from inside the gelpack will spell out a message needed for target training sequence 2\.
The message extracted from target training sequence 1 tells you what words to fill into the highlighted blanks of training sequence 2\. As you work out the 8 modifications needed to complete target training sequence 2, taking note of the subroutine letters inside the gel pack will spell the answer.
ANSWER REVEAL: The intended sequence of modifications for target training sequence 1 is as follows: WASHER \> WISHER \> WITHER \> EITHER \> ETHER \> OTHER \> OTTER \> ODDER \> ADDER \> BEEFS \> BEETS \> BETS \> BOTS. The letters to note for each modification used spell out FRIEND TO FOES. The word FRIEND should be plugged into the first highlighted set of blanks in training sequence 2\. And the word FOES should be plugged into the last highlighted set of blanks. Then, the intended sequence of modifications for training sequence 2 is as follows: FRIEND \> FIEND \> FIELD \> WIELD \> WELD \> WEED \> FEED \> FEES \> FOES. The letters to note from each used modification is this series spells out the answer ECHELONS. Looking at the double-circle “sciences” envelope, echelons is synonymous with RANKS. So RANKS is the keyword that grants access to the envelope.
